Unprecedented Russian Air Strikes Unleashed Across Ukraine

In a widespread overnight assault, Russia has initiated a barrage of attacks on multiple cities throughout Ukraine, escalating tensions in the region. The onslaught, detected through a nationwide air alert, involved drones and missiles targeting key Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, and Lviv during the early hours of Friday morning.

Reports indicate that at least 12 people have lost their lives, with numerous others injured in the wake of these attacks. The strikes occurred shortly after Ukraine targeted a Russian warship in the occupied Crimean port of Feodosiya, escalating the conflict between the two nations.

The scale of the attacks is unprecedented, affecting cities from Lviv in the west to Dnipro and Kharkiv in the east, and Odesa in the south, along with the capital, Kyiv. Ukraine's Air Force spokesperson, Yuriy Ihnat, revealed that Russia employed a combination of hypersonic, cruise, and ballistic missiles, including the elusive X-22 type, making interception challenging. Ihnat noted, "We've never seen so many targets hit simultaneously."

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that Russia deliberately targeted social and critical infrastructure across Ukraine. In Kyiv, authorities reported two fatalities and 17 injuries, describing it as "one of the most massive airstrikes on the territory of Ukraine." A metro station serving as an air raid shelter was hit, resulting in fires at multiple warehouses and residential buildings.

Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov confirmed one fatality and several injuries, with strikes damaging a hospital and residential structures. In Dnepropetrovsk, five casualties were reported, with a shopping center and a maternity hospital targeted. Odesa's mayor disclosed a building catching fire from a downed drone, leading to two deaths and 15 injuries, including two children aged six and eight.

Zaporizhzhia experienced one fatality and 10 injuries due to attacks on critical infrastructure, while Lviv reported one death and three injuries. The extensive assault underscores the severity of the situation and raises concerns about the broader impact on Ukraine's civilian population.

The timing of the Russian attack coincides with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressing gratitude to the US for a recently approved $250 million military aid package, including air defense ammunition. Ukrainian presidential aide Andriy Yermak emphasized on Telegram that "the world needs to see that we need more support and strength to stop this terror."

This escalation follows a successful Ukrainian attack on the Black Sea port of Fedosiya in Russian-occupied Crimea earlier this week, damaging the large landing ship Novocherkassk. The success of this attack provided a morale boost to Ukrainians amid concerns about diminishing Western support in the ongoing conflict.
